Glenwood Springs, CO TAR 2006 Day 4 - Colorado
River Trail - Wednesday, July 5, 2006 |
Bob: 719-649-6895 |
Gary: 303-818-3030 |
Today's ride departs from in front of the Denver
Hotel at 9:00AM. The Glenwood Canyon I-70 Highway Project is an engineering
marvel of the 20th Century. To really enjoy the magnitude of this project you
need to ride the Glenwood Canyon Bike Trail from Glenwood Springs to just
west of Dotsero. From the Hotel Denver the ride is 17.5 miles to the end of
the trail through Glenwood Canyon and along the Colorado River. It is gradual
climbing up river and downhill back to Glenwood Springs. There are several rest
areas along the Bike Path with restrooms and fresh water. If you choose to
take this day off, you may want to do this ride on one of the other days or
early on Saturday morning prior to your departure. Another option is a bike
and hike to Hanging Lake. This is a must do ride. |

If interested in more distance, continue east of
the paved road 3 miles to Dotsero. There are no services in Dotsero. For
additional miles you can cross under I-70 to US 6 and ride east to Gypsum (7
miles) or to Eagle (an additional 7 miles). There is another option to ride
northeast out of Dotsero on CR 133 along the Colorado River. This is a
beautiful ride with little to no traffic. The road eventually turns to dirt
in about 14 miles. There are no services along this route and cellular phones
don't work. There are a few farms & ranches along the route. This route
is not recommended unless you are riding with others. Make sure you have
plenty of water because you will be riding in high desert terrain. If you
decide to do this ride, make sure you have plenty of water and some food. |
